How to create two homes for your kids

Going through a divorce is a complicated and confusing time for both you and your children. Additionally, the time after a divorce can be just as complex.

Chances are, there are a lot of changes happening in your family during this time. These changes can affect your children significantly. Your children will probably have to split their time between you and your soon-to-be ex. That means two homes, two sets of belongings and two sets of holidays. As a parent, you do not want the problems in your family to have too much of a negative impact on your kids.

Fortunately, there are ways you can make these life changes easier on your kids. Having to live in two different homes may be the most significant adjustment and there are tips you can use to make this experience more comfortable and less tumultuous.

Tips to use

Helping your children adjust to living in two different houses at the same time is not too difficult. Here are a few ways to make the process more seamless and smooth for everyone:

  • Have duplicate items at both houses
  • Treat them to special items at each house
  • Maintain a similar routine at both houses
  • Be positive about the situation (i.e. do not criticize the other house)
  • Make sure your parenting plan is solid
  • Respect your children’s feelings, thoughts and activities

Creating a good environment for your children may require you to work with your ex and compromise. This, along with the tips, may seem like a lot of work, but it is worth it to give your children the best childhood experience.
